Microbial ID Services by DNA Sequencing
Since 2004, Laragen has provided bacterial and fungal identification by rDNA sequences.
For sample preparation, clients can either send us bacterial or fungal colonies on an agar plate or in liquid culture. Isolates for both bacterial and fungal samples must be pure cultures. Colonies on the agar plates should be well separated, so we can pick up a single colony. Liquid cultures should be centrifuged with the cell pellets sent to us in either 15 ml culture tubes or 1.7 ml Eppendorf tubes.
Laragen provides research and GLP grade (compliant with FDA CFR 21, Part 58) microbial identification by DNA sequencing.
Declaration: Laragen is not a clinical laboratory and is not equipped to deal with pathogenic microbes. We only accept BSL-1 and BSL-2 (BioSafety Level 1 and 2) bacteria and fungi. We do NOT accept BSL-3 and BSL-4 bacteria and fungi.

Bacterial ID 500/1200 service
We provide the following services for Bacterial ID 500/1200 Service:
- Extract genomic DNA from bacterial colony or culture
- PCR amplify and sequence the first 500/1200 bp of 16S rDNA with universal bacterial primers
- Manually edit the consensus sequences from both strands
- Identify the unknown bacterium using GenBank or RDP Databases
- Align the unknown sequence with the top 10 matches at the species or genus level
- Construct a phylogenetic tree using a neighbor-joining algorithm
Fungal ID D1D2/ITS Service
We provide the following services for Fungal ID Service:
- Extract genomic DNA from fungal colony or culture
- PCR amplify and sequence the first 600 bp of 28S rDNA (D1/D2) or ITS regions
- Manually edit the consensus sequences from both strands
- Identify the unknown fungus using GenBank or RDP Databases
- Align the unknown sequence with the top 10 matches at the species or genus level
- Construct a phylogenetic tree using a neighbor-joining algorithm
